How cat kaomoji whiskers and mouths work

The classic outline puts an equals sign or a caret on each side, which reads as pointed ears, and an omega (ω) or a wide ﻌ in the middle for the mouth. ฅ on both ends is a different ear, closer to little raised paws. A T-shaped mouth with a long ェ reads as teary rather than content, and a flat ´ω` looks mildly unimpressed. Whiskers are not a separate drawing. The side marks do that job, so deleting them to save space can turn the cat into a generic smile.

Sleepy and curious cat kaomoji

A lowered ˘ω˘ is the lap-cat face, good beside a quiet status. Brighter eyes and a ▽ or ∇ mouth feel delighted. The teary T-mouth is for a joke about being wronged, not for a cheerful intro. Paw-ear cats are wider and friendlier. In a short line, the compact (=^･ω･^=) shape is easier to recognize than a cat buried in flowers or stars. Those decorated versions live with the aesthetic and sparkle sets on purpose.

Cat kaomoji in names and captions

Cats are some of the most recognizable text animals, which is useful when the reader will only glance. They are less useful when the font drops the omega or the paw mark. ω is a small rounded mouth, used for cats and other soft animals. It does not translate as a word. The ears around it are what make the face a cat.

Why do some cats use ฅ?

That character gives a paw-like ear, so the face reads as a kitten with its paws up. It is wider than an equals-sign cat and a little more likely to look odd in a strict font.

Can I put a cat in a short username?
